Welcome to Margareta Hook's Homepage

When my parents returned to Sweden from East Turkestan 1937 my mother was expecting me! I grew up with East Turkestan in my heart. Every now and then mother made "polla ash" - a delicious  ricemeal with onions, carrots and meat.

After medical studies in Sweden I worked with an international mission in Nepal. My love for East Turkestan, today the Xinjiang province of China,  made me try to learn a little bit of the language. My mother's diary is a wonderful record of a dedicated  Swedish woman´s  journeys to and life in East Turkestan. From my parents albums we will share old pictures with you from that time.

In 1998 my husband Björn and I made  a journey in my parents' footsteps on the  Karakoram Highway to Xinjiang. From our new pictures you can compare how the old silk road and  places in Xinjiang look today!

In the National Archives in Stockholm there is a collection called "Ostturkestansamlingen"  -  the East Turkestan collection - gathered by the late Samuel Franne.  It contains almost 8 800 photographs, texts, diaries of Swedes who worked in East Turkestan from the period of 1892 till 1938. From this fantastic source of information  I am gathering material to give some lifestories of uighurs  in  East Turkestan during the l930-s.
